Renting out an apartment as a foreigner

Hello all!

I am from Germany and have been considering living in a country with a warmer climate during the winter months for quite some time. For example, if I were to live in Mauritius from October to March, I believe this would be possible as a tourist and I wouldn't need a long-term residence permit, correct? If I read correctly, it is also possible for foreigners to purchase apartments in Mauritius. Would it be possible to buy an apartment, live in it during the winter months, and rent it out e.g. through Airbnb for the rest of the year? Would I need to register a business for this? How does it work with taxes? Do I need a bank account in Mauritius for this? Has anyone here in the forum done something like this before? So many questions...聽

@zandiz welcome.

Why not consider buying an apartment worth $375k or more AND getting residency? That way, all avenues are open to you. In addition, if you spend more than 183 days in Mauritius, you may be able to become tax resident in Mauritius.

Hi, yes I also thought about this and maybe in some years (10+) it would be possible but not now. So my questions are still open what is possible and how can I do it. Because I am for the first time in my live on Mauritius together with my wife and my son from end of June for 3,5 weeks it will be possible to meet in person and also maybe visit flats etc. to get an idea. Only written text and some photos can not substitute to be there.

The EDB website will give you the basic information you need. I think the normal tourist visa gives you 2 months time in the country.

As a foreigner, it seems you can buy a property in an approved G+2 development but it needs to be at least 6.5 million rupees. This doesn't give you any 'residential' rights, but I am sure you can rent it out.

If you are in Mauritius, make an appointment with the EDB and ask your questions.
