Chinese New Year

Post new topic

Yesterday my Grandson had no school because of Chinese New year. Probably Chinese kids in China had classes.

It seems his school looks fro reasons to dismiss classes for the day. Often classes would be cancelled for typhoons that never happen.

Do they have off for Yom Kippur?  Big holiday coming up this Sunday, I am sure they will have no school.  Groundhog Day!!!  Can't wait to find out if we will have 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring.

Relative to Yom Kipper and the Philippines. During 1937 & 1941 the Philippines took in 1,000 Jewish refuges escaping the Nazis, due to the effort of President Quezon.

During the same period the US, Canada, Great Brittan, France & Australia had restrictive policies or outright refused Jewish refugees.

Today the Jewish population in the Philippines is about 300.

It is a holiday but it is a "working" holiday. From PhilStar:

"MANILA, Philippines — Employees who will not work today to celebrate the Lunar New Year will not be getting any pay, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

In an advisory yesterday, the DOLE said the “no work, no pay” rule shall apply today, which has been declared a special non-working holiday to commemorate the Chinese New Year."

I don't know why kids can stay home. Teachers could probably show up and spend the day catching up on things.
