Retirement in Yogyakarta

daviddomoney

Hi All,

Dave here from UK, living in Malaysia my wife is from East Java. However, she lived 25 years overseas, so she does not know too well about best places.

I was wondering of any recommendations of areas nearby (maybe 30mins - 1 hour) from Yogyakarta in the countryside?

There are a lot of places.

Retirement might well require easy access to medical facilities, so I would Google Maps hospitals and start from there.

You need to be near a town for shopping, but villages are the easiest on the pocket, so a village close to a small town that is in easy reach of medical facilities sounds like a possible plan.

Yoga is a decent sized city, but not so big as to have Jakarta's problems.

I have to admit a fondness for the place, and it's a fine choice for retirement.

Great thanks Fred - any villages you would suggest? Is Siloam Yogyakarta the best one?

I've driven through many times, but never stopped.

I seem to think Mt. Merapa can be a problem, but that needs checking.

Sentul city Bogor province is worth a look

By bus to Jakarta 30 mins and at 25,000 IRP one way does not break the bank . Medical and shopping and a cinema plus 3 markets and easy access to tollway .

Plus only 10 mins from Bogor

Worth looking at

That's impossible to argue with. Bogor and Bandung are both worth a look.

I lived in Bogor (Kota Hujan: rain city) for many months.  Botanical gardens with deer herd.  Only 45 minutes to Jakarta. Absolutely loved it!

Yes Bogor is nice. Do you think Puncak Bogor is a good place for retirement?

No, because it's too isolated.

Shopping is very limited and there is very little by way of medical facilities or anything else.

The roads are slow and can be dangerous, especially in the wet season.

Ah okay, yes medical is a key consideration. How about Malang or Batu in East Java?

Fred

Your best bet is to mark a potential area on google maps, then search for 'rumah sakit' (hospital).

Google's review will give you a pretty good idea what hospitals and other facilities are like.

Do the same for supermarkets, restaurants, and so on.

Sure thing thanks. By any chance do you know of any areas in the mountains near Malang other than Batu? Heard Batu getting too busy these days.
