For people moving/moved to Nairobi from other countries, how did you find a job? And how long did a work visa take to obtain, if married to a kenyan? Any Nursing jobs available?

Work visas are most often given for jobs where there is a skills shortage in Kenya.  Iam fairly sure that nursing is not one of these.  It is actually your employer who applies for the work permit, once you apply for a job.

Many expats work for NGO's, UN and foreign owned companies.  It is my understanding that the move to Kenya usually comes after the job has been secured.

The new constitution will change rules for those married to Kenyan's, but not sure how..........yet.

Thank u for responding. I am married to a Kenyan and am aware of where to go to get work visas. It is difficult getting a job at the UN, NGO, and others due to not having enough experience. So I was inquiring to see wht others do in this circumstance.

Hi,  I am also married to a Kenyan, but being a man it has not helped me to gain employment in Kenya.  I am a health professional and there are no openings for me at all - plenty of qualified, but unemployed OT's.  For the last seven years, I have worked for a few months in the UK, every year, which I really detest doing.

At this point, I have been advised to wait until the part of the new constitution relating to immigration and citizenship in enacted and I would advise you to do the same - am sure it will open a few more doors!

Yes we went there to talk to them about dual citizenship for people married to Kenyans and they said October everyone should hear something but what I have seen is Kenya works on things slower than USA. I just don't want to give up my job in the u.s. for no job in Kenya. I would definitely love to experience Nairobi and ultimately be with my husband more than a couple of weeks at a time. I do like ur idea of going back to your country a few months in a year to work but I know that has to also be stressful and upsetting when u have to leave.

I have heard rumours that the dual citizenship applications will be accepted after the next election.  The bill was supposed to have been passed in August.  There is a lot of pressure from Kenyans living in the UK and US, about this.

I manage to work in the UK for periods of about 6 - 8 months and spend the rest of the year in Kenya and my wife joins me in the UK for about 2 - 3 of those months.

We do rent property in Kenya, which actually gives us a comfortable income.  However, at the moment, as I do not have a visa for a long stay, I need to be able to work whaen I come to the UK and of course, in my profession I cannot remain out of work for a long period. :)

Thanks Socialiser, I am already a keen peruser of the jobs pages.  Unfortunately the NGO's who might hire someone with my background and skills, demand NGO experience.............from where am I expected to get this??
