Problems with paperwork

Hi fellas!

** sry this is urgent, hadn't time to search from the forums **

I'm an EU resident and I have currently been living in Malta for 6 months. I did the needed work when I started working in a company here, got the ID, social security number and opened an bank account. I was a fool, when I thought that the ID was the only thing I needed to officialise my stay in here. I heard that there is a form that I need to apply for called the residence permit. I reported the tax form to my company last week (even though tax has been paid out from my salary each month all the time) and I am now planning to get a residence permit. Will there be a problem as I have been staying in Malta after the end of March now? I am now a bit scared as I genuinely had no idea about this permit. I've never used the health services etc, if that's something which needs to be known. Will I be fined etc?

Hi Jonas ,

welcome to the forum.

Many Expats,maybe even a majority, seem to think that all they need is an ID card to live in Malta. Luckily I've never heard of consequences for applying late so it's not like Germany where you will get a hefty fine.

The document is not a permit as EU citizens are allowed to live anywhere in the EU but have to register and receive a 'Registration Certificate' also called 'Residence Document'.

If you are working you should be paying National Insurance contributions and so be covered for health issues. If not, you will need a private health insurance to register for residency.

Why did you report the tax form to your company ? The way I know it you declare your taxes with IRS or is your company doing your taxes for you?
