Tap water in HCMC

Post new topic

Is it safe to drink the tap water at home if a water filter is used? Any expats have experience trying this?

If no, is there a place to buy bottled water in larger quantities to save some on the price?

I don't think it's safe for use if you get the tap water filtered, Sarah. To make the tap water drinkable, you have to get it boiled first or if you like to buy large quantities of bottle water, you can choose to buy 19-litre bottle to be economical.

Boil the tap water first..   Kills more bugs than filtering IF there are any in it in the first place.
If you still want bottles, your landlord should be able to arrange big water bottles to get delivered to you.

Be careful buying bottled water, many companies water is just as bad as the tap water.

Get from a good distributor and Aquafina is a good brand. I have used them but also try to boil the water first is a good practice.

You must always boil water before using. If you move here for the first time, you should boil water from bottles, too. Order big bottles and boil them before using. After getting along well with food & water here, then you can drink bottled water.

Vietnam only has secondary wastewater treatment.  That means there're no turds or twigs floating in it but it has bacteria, including coliform, and heavy metals.  A filtration system helps but locally made ones usually don't last and don't alert you they've worn out.

The Vietnamese like to re-label some bottle waters and it's pretty easy to do so. Next time you take a long bus trip and they hand out free water inspect the labels.

I get constant stomach problems almost everyday and I've been in Vietnam over a year. I'm heading back to Canada next week so I'll know if it's the water or not if my stomach problems go away.

I caught a fish once in a local stream here and it was full of big bumps. It's too bad. Years ago I could easily swim in any body of water now there's no chance of that happening especially in Industrial Bien Hoa.
