Hi,
I am going to join a new start-up company in Malaysia. Still salary negotiations are going on, & nearly 5600USD per month聽 they are emphasizing on.
For a family of three (me, my wife & a 3 year old daughter),will this much amount be sufficient聽 for us.
We live a very decent life style with no luxury like car etc. I am also looking for my daughters education next year.
Please reply in detail the basic expenses & what amount would I be able to save there.

Please take a look at the Forum as there are numerous postings about Cost of Living in Malaysia. You could search on the word "salary".

The level you mention is completely satisfactory to live at a reasonable level in the Klang Valley and have a bit of savings as well. Housing costs will depend on size, age, and location of the property. Its best to live as close as possible to work, or to public transport if you don't intend to have a car. Do some research on schools at this early stage, so you choose to live somewhere convenient for the school of your choice as well.

Well if it is USD - Malaysians say bux or dollar for ringet especially older people - then聽 at current rates is approx 16k RM after tax.

Less 3k a month for a decent primary education. 1.5k for a car and 3-6k per month for an apartment. 2k for food and 0.5k for utilities so 7-10k spent from 13k. So before medical, pension, capital items (eg computers) and travel you are left with 3-6k. Most people should save at least 30% as deferred pay(pension)聽 so that is 4.8k net so on average you break even with one holiday a year and a modest lifestyle. Doable with a small family but not luxury. However the opportunity is the main thing with a role like that so seems fair.

But what about currency risk? Are you paid in USD? Risky as 3 myr to USD may come back and you are stuffed worse than an Xmas turkey.
