Aged Care for British pensioner in Tenerife

Post new topic

Brumney1

My mother retired from the UK 20 years ago and lives in Tenerife. She lives on a small pension. Her health is not the best and may soon need full time care. I have been told that by having spent more than  18 months out of the UK she no longer has any right to state provided aged care. I am sure that her pension would not cover the cost of private care on Tenerife. Has anybody got any advice or relevant thoughts that they could share with me. Unfortunately I live in Australia, who's immigration dept simply wouldn't allow her any form of residence and my moving to Tenerife/UK isn't an option. I look forward to your comments and advice. Thank you.

Yes, but how do the authorities know that she's been out of the UK for 18 months Brumney? Your passport is no longer stamped.
I'm not saying to lie, but it does leave it wide open eh? Steve

Indeed, trying to get back into the UK would be the safest,  in my mind. Not that health care is great in Britain, these days. So I am told by a British ex health care worker who has been living in Tenerife North  for a very long time. She also is very fond of the medical system and had successful knie operations.

I know that the elderly don't like to leave Tenerife. In that case it would be best to change life style to try and get as healthy as possible. By the way, Tenerife is planning some governmental care for the elderly, but that make take time. I know many frail people who employ private help which they pay out of their own pocket. To find a good soul like that who is affordable is another good option.
