Essentials to live in Oman

Post new topic

Christine

Hi,

As an expat living in Oman, what would you advise the ones about to pack to bring along?

What are the items you can easily find in Oman? On the other hand, what is less common or quite expensive?

Share with us what you would recommend to bring in oneÂ’s suitcase or container when moving to Oman.

Thank you in advance,

Christine

Hi,
Oman is tax free country and almost all the things u will find here,Electronic gadgets and cars are cheap here, Actually everything is cheap here except garments, foot wear and spare parts of electronics and automobile. I hope u find what your looking for.

Make sure you should have some routine medicines, bandages and a small first Aid box. Medicines are too costly in Oman here.

Hello Christine.  Bring nothing. But you come yourself in full. Then you will not miss Home country. Oman is a beautiful country, one can get everything under the Sun. I mean it. Believe me :-)

Yes, Oman IS a beautiful country and yes, most things ARE available but taste different or are expensive. I find the toothpaste manufactured here tastes odd so I bring my own supply. I also bring shelled sunflower seeds (hard to find), maple syrup and canned salmon (both available but extremely expensive), red wine vinegar, malaria pills if you plan to travel to Africa (very difficult to obtain here), good quality mosquito repellent, and dry salami like summer sausage if you enjoy pork products. Bring your own spices and seasonings because certain familiar brands may not be sold here. Blueberries and raspberries are very expensive and strawberries are both expensive (most of the time) and tasteless. The nearest IKEA is in Dubai, so bring your favourite IKEA accessories with you. Slow cookers (crock pots) are not sold here. I managed to find one at Lakeland in Doha (and Dubai). Good quality wax crayons (Crayola brand) are very expensive and 3 ring binders and paper are not available (everything is 2 ring). I have not found printed sewing patterns so if you sew, you may need to download commercial patterns or bring your own.

if you are gadget freak, prepare to import many latest gadgets, as i haven't been able to find many latest ones and even if i find like after 2-3 months they are priced almost 1.5 times the actual price.

This might sound absurd but, if you are coming form India, then you can also buy a few new footwares as i have found they are cheap in India, and i am talking about the reputed brands.
