How to bring your car to Singapore

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everybody,

If you exported your car to Singapore, were there any formalities that needed to be completed beforehand? What were they?

What is the best way to export your car? Is there a limit on the number of vehicles, or perhaps the age of the vehicle? Are there limits on emissions or emission controls in Singapore?

What are the expected costs of exporting a car? In your opinion, is it worth it?

Once you arrived in Singapore, what were the applicable taxes? What was the customs process like?

How do you go about registering an imported car in Singapore?

Is it best to buy a car once you have arrived or to bring your car with you, in your opinion?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Singapore is the most expensive place in the world to own and operate a car.
It is not allowed to import used cars (and new ones incur 150% of their value import tax).
You have to bid for a CoE - a permit to own a car (valid for 10 years and currently costing above S$50000).
Add to that parking costs, highway tolls, petrol prices, the crowded streets and the excellent state of the public transport network and living without car suddenly seems the much better option!

Agree
Singapore is the most expensive city currently, mostly because of housing and cars.
Buying a second hand car with CoE expiring in 3-4 years may cost at least 20-30k. I think it would be much more expensive to import a car. Public transport is convenient and the country is small. Cabs are not too expensive too.
