VAT on UK Car

Post new topic

Bobby911

Anyone know how to claim back UK VAT on a car imported to Malta ? Although VAT was paid in UK we had to pay again in Malta. Transport Malta said we can claim back UK VAT. They told me to contact HMRC. HMRC say it has to be done in Malta. Have you been through this process ? If so, please let me know. It happens to cars with under 6000 km on the clock.

I think the OP is talking about VAT paid on the purchase of a new car in the UK and then imported to Malta at less than 6000km which is classed as new and the Maltese government has charged VAT on the new price.
The article in the 'Independent' refers to VAT charged on the 'Registration Tax' of any imported vehicle which is why it is only €500 - €1000 in most cases!

Not sure what you can do now as normally if you buy something in the UK which is going for immediate export you can buy without UK VAT and then pay VAT in the country to which you are importing the goods.
The Maltese system will charge VAT, as they have done on your vehicle, which they regard as new. (Under 6000km)
I assume you checked out the Maltese vehicle import rules before you brought you vehicle here?
Did you tell the dealer you bought the vehicle from that it was for export or not?
