Banking for Expats

Post new topic

I've heard most banks in Thailand make it difficult for an expat to withdraw large sums (THB 30,000+) from their account or to transfer the funds out of country.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

I am not sure why this problem with banks keep circulating but I have never experienced any problem withdrawing any amount from my account.

I frequently get 50k baht (2 X 25k baht) using my ATM card.  I've bought cars, motorcycles and a condo getting cash or cashiers check from counter in the bank over the last 15 years.  At no time have they even ask why.  I personally haven't needed to transfer money out of country but a couple friends have without problems.

I once drew 875,000 baht out in cash to buy a car, no questions asked why.

To transfer money I always use Transferwise.
It is very cheap and quick. I heared a lot of expats use it to transfer their money in or out of the country. I use it every month and am very happy with it.

Thanks Straydog, Johnmell, and A. Blom.  We won't worry about this issue.

there is a limit sending money out of country.
if you have a work permit, then you can apply for a permit to transfer more money out.
On K-Bank you can do that online (info also online) if you have internet banking.

Thanks kschindl.  Do you know what the limit it to transfer money out of country?  Is the limit per each transfer or can you get around it by making multiple transfers?

As per K-Bank online banking:
International transfer daily limit (THB)
1,000,000.00

I can work with that.  Thanks kschindl for the info.
