First impressions after moving to Oman

Hello everyone,

You probably have vivid memories of your first weeks as an expat in Oman. Indeed, moving to a new country is a milestone in someone’s life.

Today, we invite you to share with the community how you experienced your first steps in this country.

Excitement, joy, worry: What was your main feeling when you arrived in Oman?

How has your state of mind changed over time?

Have you called upon expatriate support associations? If so, what was their role in your local integration?

What was the impact of your new environment (climate, setting, professional environment) on your mental health?

Is it easy to socialize in Oman? What advice would you give to newcomers to meet people, make new friends and build a strong professional network there?

Thank you for your contribution!

Have a nice day,

Diksha,

It was an incredibly lonely experience, and I was almost scared to go into a shop.  After a while I became settled and met people and within two years took the bull by the horns and started driving out here.  (I already had my UK licence) It is a very different country from anywhere I had been to before, apart from a three day visit to Dubai on the way to OZ.  When I stepped off the plane, the heat hit me, and that has taken much getting used to.  However, 12 and a bit years later we are still here, but into our last couple of years max.  It has been an adventure for sure, and mostly a really pleasant experience.  The country has changed considerably during our time here, and with so many expats leaving that is hard , as you lose friends you may never see again.
To anybody new just be careful about how you dress, always be polite and watch the driving, that can be daunting.
