What are you missing in Morocco?

Post new topic

Diksha

Hi everyone,

Living in Morocco, on the long or short run, it is completely normal to feel homesick sometimes. We would like to know what you are missing the most about your home country in Morocco.

Do you miss any aspects of your home culture? If so, what are these?

Are you able to reproduce dishes from home and find the necessary ingredients?

What about leisure activities? Have you had to reconsider your favourite activities? If so, which ones have you had to give up?

Are there any celebrations or traditions from your home country that you cannot take part in Morocco?

How do you cope with that in your daily life?

Thanks for your contribution!

Diksha,

There is little I miss about UK while in Morocco, least of all the weather. Over the past 40 years of coming to Morocco and more recently living here for short periods at a time, I accept it is a very different country with a very different culture. Morocco has become my second home-from-home because I have friends and family here; people I can rely on and trust completely. Accepting that it is a pole apart from the UK means that I do not compare it to the UK it is irrelevant. It would be great if drivers had better standards and people and councils were more attuned to waste disposal but I have every confidence even these mundane but important aspects of living will improve in time.
There are everyday reminders that Morocco is not a wealthy country and life if hard for the majority; being mind of this is important and showing equal respect to everyone we meet is a duty of citizens and visitors alike.  Accept and enjoy Morocco as it is.

Rob you’re 100% right with you words, I couldn’t agree more.
You can’t compare the U.K. to Morocco because they are poles apart, each has there own +\- and in there lies the very essence of why I love both countries. Accepting the differences means you live for now, by comparing you’re creating emotion, be it frustration at the standard of driving or worry because of you are unable to buy a specific ingredient for example.
We should never compare ourselves to others, each of us are unique individuals, having that inner peace radiates to those around you. So why compare countries is my question to Diksha? Surely a better question is how and what can we ask expats bring to Morocco from our experiences, how can we make a difference from what we have experienced and or seen. Accessible and affordable education for children should be high on the agenda.

I agree with the comments in this discussion. Both make good valid points, As both of you mentioned you can compare any country with each other as every country is technically the same in one way or another.

In addition;
People always talk negative about Morocco or how the corruption has put people off. But what people fail to understand is, all country have corruption, its just that some countries are good at hiding it than other. Other countries are more open about it and in some aspect that can be a good thing, at least you no what to expect and not in a shock when it happens.

As for the Infrastructure, all countries have these problems, for example some parts of Britain the roads are even more terrible than in Morocco from my experience.

Hosptial and medical care is far more expensive in the UK compared to Morocco - But the treatment can be the same were just not used to the running around in order to get to the same care. Some of the best dr are from Morocco but people fail to see that.

Morocco is a developing country and a country that most of the globe is starting to look too for help. We all fail to see this and by asking questions in such a way only decides us rather than unites us. If we all start to look at the countries differently and not from the eyes of the media then we can all learn to accept and appreciate a country and put aside the differences.

We can never say what we miss as these days we have easy access to every single thing and everything is a short distance away. Flight to the UK 4.5 hours at times.
Drive to London from the North West around 4-6 Hours depending on the location.

Technology these days have helped us in the ever expanding world and for this we cannot complain but can only choose to love where we choose and build a better society and educate each other to prevent any dispute or hatred.

I find a lot of people on this site have a lot of bad comments and hatred so i just wanted to share my points above so that we can all try to get along and have a friendly discussion to help educate and speak politely to all.

This is not directed any one in this topic and its just a general comment from my self.

I do not mean hearted any one but I visited many countries and involved with government department and private as well. When i compare how society dealing  I found strange. For example they do not listen by email if I am out of city or country  they will not listen, problem will it solve , I brought five tickets from Royal Maroc Airlines when I asked refund they never come back. If you go google map and read public comments most of comments are negative. This happing from all departments banks and from etc. if some body send gift from Europe to rainier  gift have only chocolates . Most of time person have to travel from tainger to Casablanca airport to clear gift and when clear chocolates from customs you will find stolen chocolates rom the box Gift become hell , they do not care human and do not think how much this person spend the money. I believe Morocco society like this called trouble maker not proven solver. I have to tell more but I stop my self

Im sorry you have had this experience

I have ordered Chocolates from Overseas and never have i had to clear the box myself. Its always been delivered to my address in marrakech all the time. I have ordered many things from china. USA, Eu and never had any issues.

For business transaction yes you have to clear the goods are for commercial goods then you have to go to the airport to clear it unless you appoint an agent. This is normal practice in all countries not just morocco.

Yes its frustrating as many companies don't respond as fast as we would like and a lot of the time its a language issue that causes the delays but we have to remember we are in a Arabic/French speaking country so if we don't speak this its even more difficult. If you do speak it its a little easier.

As for Airline issues this problem is global not just morocco. Esyjet Ryanair all these companies have been doing the same as Royal Air Maroc etc etc so we can just blame Morocco for this.

When you do good search on customer feedback we find the same complaint and issues for UK and other countries.

As for banks iv been waiting for my Bank in the UK and USA to respond average time is 2-3 months and for application on a new account its been 1 year and yet they have not opened or declined and when i email and ring i can the same response and get sent to 100 different department and then nothing.

Morocco on the other hand the officer deals with it right away might not see results fast in some places but the job gets done. So the experiences are based on how much effort you put in and how you deal with the situation and unfortunately its the same globally.

Yes the process is frustrating but we fail to see this is gobble issue not just an Morccan issue.

Totally  agree with much of what you say, I look for the positives rather than the negatives. No country is a utopia - that we await in heaven.
