SD to Puerto Rico Ferry

Post new topic

Has anyone gone on this ferry? It leaves from el Puerto off El Malecon to PR. If so how was it? Are you able to go shopping and bring it back? What is allowed to be brought back to DR? I am thinking it will be a nice getaway from DR to go shop in PR if I can bring it back!

How long is the ride? I would assume good for the passport stamp as well.

13 hour, overnight trip, 3 times a week.

I'm curious about this too! I see the info on the site and also watched a YouTube video on it. I wonder if anyone uses it as a quick way to renew their visa if they're not a resident yet. Just take a short trip to PR for a couple days and return getting a new passport stamp.  Sounds kinda fun but I'd like to hear someone else's experience with it.

Considering there are plenty of inexpensive flights of an hour and less to San Juan, and you would need a cabin and perhaps meals, the cost for a single traveller will be similar but much longer.

@lennoxnev I heard the cabin is optional and that there are a lot of places to sit and relax, also that they have lots of bar area and dancing while cruising to  and from. But it would be great if anyone has gone to share with us. I am thinking  along the line of shopping because PR has many US stores! Just do not know what is allowed back in to DR

500usd every 3 months duty free.

2k for citizens at Christmas now.

You will spend more travelling that way and sleep less! Done that on cross UK channel ferries to Brittany, Scandinavian ferries and Greek ferries. Without a bed for 13 hours overnight is no fun especially if the sea is rough.

It looks like the ticket is about $300 round trip, $12 for a seat, and $65-95 for a cabin.

I thought I had found it earlier, but can't find anything now about what you can bring. As I recall, the rules were pretty much the same as what you can bring on a flight.

@lennoxnev You forget I live in Las Vegas sleeping is optional for an old Raver like me! LOL
My Know my mom and dad used to use it when they were alive and living in DR, unfortunately I never asked details when I had the chance while they lived. I do recall her saying that people treated it as if it was a regular cruise for the trip duration.

My wife’s aunt lives in PR and uses the ferry 4-6 times a year. She gets a cabin, but rarely uses it as there is a casino on the ferry.

I have family in PR that travels using the Ferry once or twice a year.  They bring their vehicle, avoiding renting a car in RD.  They bring it full with all you can imagine. Food, snack, cloth, shoes, ect.  As far as I know they do not pay anything else than the ticket for themselves and the vehicle.

It is pretty convenient, however is necessary to mention that cost of living is higher in PR...food and clothes are more expensive than in some cities in US.  PR is an island and they import many of their goods.  That been said, I would recommend for you to try it and let us know how it goes.

The rules could be different departing from DR to PR...I am curious and will follow the post for more information.

As someone who enjoys train and ferry rides even if a plane may be faster, I've been interested in this ferry for a while. (And I've seen the vessel at the Rio Ozama terminal). What I've heard is that the experience can be excruciating due to delays. Not 15 minutes either - I know someone who took the westward journey and there was a 9 hour delay, turning the trip into a 24 hour voyage.

@carla5contreras What?!!! You can bring your car from PR to use in DR vía the ferry? I never knew that. I am very curious to know how that works. I'd be interested in doing that

Yes and plenty of videos on that on YouTube

If you are thinking you can bring a car from Puerto Rico and import it that way - no!  Doesn't work that way.
