can I bring plant seeds into Portugal?

Andrew Rockwell

I'm planning a trip to the US in July and I would like to bring back plants seeds for my balcony spice garden that I would like to start.

Is this a problem, if it is spelled somewhere please point me to it.

Specifically seeds for Thai basil, asian eggplants, etc..

If these plants are available in Portugal, please point me to them.

For example, .  You can probably get away with bringing seeds, but it isn't permitted, without a fitosanitária permit.

try! the worst that can happen is that they throw them in the bin. I think seeds are actually permited but not plants. Please dont quote me.

Sure, you can import seeds. Helpful info from USDA:

To import planting seeds to Portugal a request has to be submitted by the local importer to Portugal’s responsible authorities (dirgeral@dgav.pt). DGAV will provide the importer with the form that need to be filled in. Once DGAV issues a positive opinion the import of the planting seeds can be carried out.

If the seeds you want are available from the site above, I'd recommend  going that route. Importing plants (and seeds are considered plants) can be a risk.

From UPS on importing plants to Portugal:

"Plants

According to Portuguese customs legislation, living plants, parts of plants, fruits, vegetables and seeds are   considered to be plants. Portugal places prohibitions and restrictions on the importation of certain plants.

A Phytosanitary Certificate must accompany all shipments of plants.

These kinds of goods require a Phytosanitary inspection, therefore additional charges and an import delay will occur.

Plants mentioned in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) must be accompanied by a valid CITES Certificate."
