You can renew your U.S. passport by mail through the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Lisbon.

The embassy website has detailed instructions at

Thanks, James! I live in Portugal and my U.S. Passport is expiring soon as well, so thanks for the link.

Hi Max - Sorry but the answer is no I have not. However, I can tell you that ALL of my ID’s expired at the same time. I was (still am in the USA) but to be honest, it took less than a month to get them all. Passport, Drivers License and the Global ID. I was shocked.

Yes, I just did it. From Portugal. Took about six weeks - start (mailing everything to the Embassy) to finish (receipt of new documents in the hand). There were no complications... but you must read the instructions very carefully especially around the envelopes needed, the amounts paid, and the photographs.

Thank you! I just paid my fee yesterday, got my photo, completed the application and am headed to CTT tomorrow to get all of the stamps/envelopes/return envelopes, etc. Hope mine goes as smoothly as yours!😉

No reason it shouldn't Daphne, just follow their instructions exactly. Once you send it, if you don't hear anything back in about 10 days, you can relax and start waiting. It takes about 2 weeks to come up in the actual tracking system though. The tracking system is quite delayed - they don't do real-time updates. Also, though the paperwork did not explicitly require it, I did include my old Passport Card as well, and they clipped that and returned it to me with the new one and the new book. I am sure yours will be fine. 😃

Sorry but what's a "Global ID"?
