work for a professional product designer / university lecturer?

Post new topic

Hi everyone,

I have been watching this forum for some time with a great deal of interest, I won't list my background here, its all on my profile, in short, my wife and I are in the UK and we are looking into relocating to MU. My wife has MU nationality and her parents live in Tamarin.

I would love to work in Mauritius as a designer or associated with the University in a lecturing post maybe, the thing is, in all the time I have been watching these forums, there appears to be very little in the way of professional creative industry over there...? is this a fair assumption?

I am trained to an advanced level using Solid Works, the International standard CAD operating software so could transfer my technical design skills to another sector, I keep a close eye on the investment comission and gather that there is a lot of new building development in MU at the moment, do you think there would be opportunity to use my skills in an architectural context maybe...?

So many questions I know! apologies for that, I guess as much as anything, I simply wanted to make contact and hopefully make some friends, learn a little and maybe some useful contacts for when we eventually take the plunge!

Julien, may I say "Merci" for your commitment in setting up this forum, it is a credit to you and all the other ex-pats who post here regularly, very informative and encouraging when looking for information from overseas.

Thanks :o)

Welcome on board Richard !

Just came back from a long and sunny week end... it's so good to live in Mauritius :)

There is work for creative people in Mauritius. Maybe you should consult the yellow pages and contact all the agencies ?

And yes, there is quite a lot of new constructions all around the island...

When do you plan to move ?

Hey Julien,

Thanks for your reply, good advice although I was hoping there may be other people with similar experience in Mauritius who could offer me some general advice. I know for example that the Embassy in MU has strong links with Brighton University here in the UK and there has been a long-standing arrangement where lecturers from the University visit Mauritius annually to carry our external moderating for under-graduate courses.... I'll have to dig a bit deeper!

We are currently doing some research to see if it would be feasible for us to relocate and manage to sustain a good standard of living, my wife is a Human Resources / recruitment manager for the NHS here in the UK and would be looking for similar work in MU, we are open to any suggestions, we would just like to get a better understanding of the issues involved, like I said in my previous posting, reading the forums is really helpful and we do have family who have MU Nationality so that is useful also.

Thanks again,

Rich
