Considering moving to Taichung for work

Post new topic

Lach78

Hi to all - I am looking for some advice on what Taichung and Taiwan is like to live in.

I have been offered a transfer over there with my compnay (a building company) and am considering the move.

I am an Australian in my early thirties.  I have a wife who is pregnant and am interested to know what it would be like for her before I commit to the move.

What is health care like?

What is the quality of living like?

Would it be possible to get a nanny / maid and if so, how much does it cost?

Is it safe?

How are women treated?

Where do you live in Taichung and how much does it cost?  Are there any teaching jobs (my wife is a teacher)

Thanking you all in advance.

Hi, Lach78, Welcome to visit Taiwan. ;)
Taichung is a urban area like Taipei. However, life is not as busy as Taipei. Living in Taichung is safe and cheaper than in Taipei. There is no problem between treating men or women. In Taichung area, Taichung Veterans General Hospital (), China Medical University () and Taichung Hospital () are all recommended. Your company should handle the health insurance affairs for you. Hope this helps.

I am an international teacher in Taichung and I love it.  I am here with my husband and are in our second year.  We find the city easy to live in and the people very friendly.  There are fewer foreigners and less people speak english than in Taipei but we haven't found that to be a problem.  We know very little chinese and we get by.  It is extremely safe here, I've actually never felt safer in a city.  There are often teaching positions available for teaching english at the cram schools (after school programs) and possibly even local schools but I'm not sure how that process works.  I also know of people who have nannies and maids, though I'm not sure how they found them - word of mouth I assume.  If you come with your company they often facilitate those details.

As far as health care goes it is good and cheap.  Of course there are some cultural differences.  We have become aware of a hospital that caters to foreigners: International Health Services Center at Kuang Tien General Hospital

Hope that helps!
