Expatriation to Kenya: border updates

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

in Kenya as elsewhere, the current pandemic has changed our way of life but also our mobility, due to the state of borders of nearby countries or countries we wanted to visit.

Today we would like to take stock of the current border situation in Kenya and collect your testimonies, whether you are already an expat there or still preparing your move.

Is the country currently accessible to newcomers?

Have quarantine measures been put in place? If so, what are they?

What about leaving the territory as an expat resident? Will you be able to easily reach Kenya if you leave it temporarily?

How does the current borders state impact you, whether you are already an expatriate in Kenya or are planning to move there soon?

Do you have some visibility about the future of borders in your country of expatriation, in the longer or shorter term?

Thank you in advance for your contribution :)

I am a dual national of Kenya and the USA. I recently made a trip to the US for about 10 days. To get back into Kenya I needed a PRC-based COVID-19 test. In the US, these were not hard to obtain, but the tricky part was the timing. The test can't be more than 72 hours old from the time the swab was taken from you to the time you BEGIN your journey back to Kenya. Neither can it be more than 96 hours old from the time the swab was taken until you present it at the health check in JKIA.  This was very hard to do. Nearly all testing places in the US have a 2 to 7 day turnaround time. I had to travel 600 kms (return) to get to a testing site that could process a test in 24 hours. This caused me a 2 day delay in getting back to Kenya.
